It’s not a numbers game!
I was looking through my Facebook timeline this morning when I came across an article by a guy telling people what not to do when approaching people to buy services or products.
The guy had some good points but where I take issue is the following:
If Katie had bothered to do some research here, she would have come across some interesting figures….
At the time of writing this article, she currently has 618 ‘likes’ for her company on Facebook.
I have 2,802.
She currently has 8 testimonials on LinkedIn.
I have 233.
She currently has 1,669 followers for her company on Twitter.
I have 19,603
Does anyone else see a problem with her trying to sell me Social Media services here?!!
Read MoreGoogle+ and why I am hooked?
Well after a few days of using Google+ I have to say I am hooked. Not only is it a great platform, no games or farms is great for me as they are just noise.
But some of the things I really like are:
- Being able to send messages to different groups or circles as Google calls them. This means you can target the right message to the right person or company, I can see this having an impact on email broadcast
- Being able to add people to these circles just by dragging them in
- The ability to create circles really quickly and then move on
- Searching for people with profiles is also a synch and then adding them to one or more circle
- The really uncluttered look and feel of the platform is great and let’s hope it stays that way
- The app for my android phone is just amazing and the ‘nearby’ function is great to find and hook up with people in your locale
- For us oldies it’s like Facebook for grown-ups, which I love
- For business it’s like a cross between LinkedIn and Facebook again which I really like
Read MoreGoal Setting and why you should!
Why should you set a goal or goals? Well this can be the first pitfall, don’t set too many goals or you probably won’t reach any of them!
Why set a goal? - Set a goal to give you focus, to avoid frustration, and I think most of all, to understand why you’re blogging and using Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Is it to keep in touch with friends? Is it to promote your business? Or is it to build a reputation of expertise? Goal-setting is always explorations of purpose, so take the time to explore don’t rush this part or you will lose focus on what it is you want to achieve.
What goal should I set? - Don’t be stuck with the thought that the only the numbers matter and the number of readers, followers, friends, subscribers, and viewers you can get is what counts, it doesn’t. How about connect and chat with a new person every day or writing a great article for your blog every week are worthwhile goals to set yourself.

Profile
What does your profile say about you?
- Use a picture and not an Avatar
- Use a professional picture
- This is not a CV, unless you want it to be, use it as an aspirational tool to let potential businesses know what you want to do now and in the future
- What have others used it for the same reasons you want to and can you use some of the same ideas for your profile
- According to LinkedIn, users with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to find opportunities through the site
- Use their tools and follow the suggestions that LinkedIn provide and you won’t go far wrong
- Check your profile from time to time and make any necessary adjustments
- Switch on your ‘Public Profile’ as this carries a lot of weight with search engines. My public profile is http://uk.linkedin.com/in/keithmcmean
Attract your Tribe!
When we had our Splash event a couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of inviting one of my great friends from way back Kath Temple. Kath runs a number of successful companies www.lifelonglearningcompany.com www.happinessmagazine.co.uk www.worldchangeagents.com
www.thehappinessfoundation.co.uk to name but a few.
Listening to Kath speak was a pleasure for all of us who attended the event but one thing that really struck a cord with me was when she began talking about ‘Tribes’ and how you attract them.
Now we all know the feeling when someone unsubscribe’s from our newsletter or stops following us on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. We get a little anxious that we are doing something wrong or that we have ‘upset’ them in some way. But as Kath quite rightly says “they are not our tribe” so with that they are not really meant to be following us as our message isn’t really speaking to them in the way we thought or hoped it might.
So what can we do?
