The title to this post was something I thought I could never do and I had this really limiting belief that because of who I am, where I grew up and what I had become it would never happen

My story isn’t that different to a lot of peoples, I grew up on a council estate in Whitehaven, Cumbria, I was loved by my parents and I knew it but the big difference, most people I knew growing up never thought about being an entrepreneur, hell I hadn’t even heard the term until I was well in to my forties let alone know what it meant. So my mindset was closed to that possibility, all I knew was I was going to get a job and settle down, like everyone else.

That’s a hell of a mindset to grow up with.

We talked in the last Mindset post about how you can spot what’s wrong with you and your business in this one we are going to talk about how we ‘get over’ thinking in a totally new way. You see this can be the biggest hurdle to get over. Yes you recognise that you have a problem and you have an idea on how to change it, hopefully, but are you going to stick to it?

If you have ever read Tim Ferris’s book The 4 hour week you will know that Tim is a big advocator of this and if you haven’t read it you should, it could just change your life.

In this life there are 2 sets of people…the “I’ll do it later” brigade and the “let’s get it done now” movers and shakers. Which are you? Don’t think that this applies to only the ones who own a business, it doesn’t, it applies to everyone.

What follows is some of the differences in the ‘thinking’ process and why you really do need to change your thinking. In my opinion, I haven’t trained at this I just listen to people, read books etc then give my opinion on my observations. One thing I do know though, it works.

IDIL: I have to work for myself
LGIDN: I want others to work for me

IDIL: I would really like to work when I choose
LGIDN: I want to do the minimum possible, to get maximum benefit

IDIL: I really want to retire, like NOW!
LGIDN: Retirement is not an option for me, I want to live life and do what I want to do and when, regardless of age

IDIL: I would love to be able to buy the things I want
LGIDN: I want to be all the things I dreamed I would be, visit all the places I dreamed I would using whatever means possible

IDIL: I have to work for myself and be in charge, I want to be the boss
LGIDN: I want to own whatever I like and have others run it for me

You can see where I’m going with this, you need to change your thinking and get out of the rut you are in to live the life you want. Now this might all seem so far away at the moment, it might be something you sort of dream about but never expect to achieve.

Here’s what I did. I wanted to spend more time doing the things I love doing, family, painting, reading, walking everything that made me happy and a better person. So at Christmas 2016 I decided I wouldn’t work Fridays from that moment on, now I have to confess that this doesn’t always happen, sometimes I don’t work Wednesdays or Mondays, the point is I made the commitment to do it, and I felt better in myself that I did.

I have at least 1 day off per week for ‘me’. That was a step in the right direction. If you are thinking, “what can I do, I can’t take a day off every week my boss would go crazy”, think of something else, maybe spend the time you would normally watch TV reading a book that would help move you forward in some way? Only you know what you would like to do that would make a difference to you…go do it, don’t wait.

Today we have everything to run our business at our fingertips. Smartphones, laptops, and high speed internet connections, we can run our business from pretty much anywhere in the world, so what stops us?

Mindset, that’s what stops us. We think, and our bosses think this to, we have to be in an office, we’ve paid for it so we are using it. That’s bullshit. I have sat in coffee shops, airport lounges, hotels and service stations running a successful business. If you decide you want to spend the next six months in Kuala Lumpur there is absolutely no reason why you can’t, if your business is set up correctly that is and there is a good enough internet connection, that’s a must these days. In future posts we’ll go through how you can do that and make it work for you.

You see where you are based can have a fundamental impact on not only your life but your business too. You don’t need an expensive office, start from home. I have had both and now I am based at home, and love it, not everyone can work from home but again this is a mindset thing. When you are doing what you want to do and making money from it you can work from anywhere my friend.

Life is about choices, what you do, where you do it, when you do it and with whom you do it.  This is real freedom, this is freedom that most strive for but never achieve because their mindset is all screwed up. It just so happens that you can make a lot or money and gain a lot more time by doing at least half of what you are doing now…and I’ll attempt to prove it to you in the coming weeks.

Never think that this can only work for someone else, you are that someone else and never think that you can’t do it, you can, you can do anything thing you choose to…so start choosing.

A client of mine, Andres, quoted to me something that Kate Moss had said “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” Now that’s a hell of a powerful statement, controversial but powerful.

Don’t let these limiting beliefs stop you from reaching your goals if you want to lose weight, tell yourself everyday internally, you are losing weight, if you want to earn a certain amount tell yourself every day that you are earning x amount and guess what…very soon you will be. Don’t go shouting this down the street, or maybe you should if it makes you feel better. 🙂

If you keep telling yourself that you are going to be fat broke and lonely for the rest of your life…guess what, you will be.

The power of the mind is an awesome thing.

So what next?

STOP telling yourself that you can’t be…

START telling yourself that you can be…and that you ARE what you want to be.

  • Tell yourself every day that you ARE (X)
  • Say it over and over again
  • Write it down and carry in your wallet or handbag
  • Have it on your phone as a screensaver
  • Write it on post it notes and put them everywhere, house, office, toilet 😉
  • Because this really does work…start now…don’t wait!!

Next time we will discuss how you start this process and how to stick to it and not fall back into your old ways.

Have a great day.
