Social MediaI gave a talk on Friday 16th march 2012 on this very subject and below is pretty much what I spoke about, give or take, so I hope you enjoy it and take something from it.

The talk started off with how social media can impact on your business and that if you aren’t using it in some way then you are really missing out. The way that businesses us social media can really determine how success can be measured. I always advocate the following if you are a new business:

Facebook to close Facebook Deals

Facebook

According to Reuters Facebook are about to close down their Deals program. After just four months!

Run as a Goupon-like system, a spokesman said

“After testing Deals for four months, we’ve decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks.”

“We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses. We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses.”

The end of Facebook Deals is “certainly good” for Groupon and other daily deal services, Vacanti said.

Facebook…are they getting it right?

Posted by on Apr 26, 2010 in Facebook | 0 comments

“To improve your experience and promote consistency across the site, we’ve changed the language for Pages from “Fan” to “Like.” We believe this change offers you a more light-weight and standard way to connect with people, things and topics in which you are interested.”

That was the statement from Facebook when they decided to replace being fans with ‘liking’.

Now I am not sure how this will affect a business and its brand? It can take a lot of time and effort for a business to build up its client base and brand and just like Kevin Roberts, Worldwide CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi states in his book Lovemarks this can transcend just ‘liking’ a brand.

For anyone who has attended my seminars or workshops on Social Marketing this forms a part of what we discuss and put into practise and how someone ‘loving’ your brand can make such a big difference to it performance and ultimately bottom line. Think why McDonald’s changed its strap line to ‘I’m Loving It! That word love is such an emotive thing and is being used more and more in the business world.

My own experiences with loving a brand started when I got my first car, yes it’s a boy thing I know, it was a green Mini, not just and Mini but a British Racing Green Mini. Now those who know me know I am over 6ft tall so not really suited to driving a Mini but that didn’t stop me from having four throughout my driving life, I just love them and would have another tomorrow if given the chance. So now I have become what’s known as a brand ambassador for Mini as I tell anyone and everyone how much I love them.

If you think about your own brands and what you love not like about them I am sure you can come up with a list of more than four?

Here’s my brand list, off the top of my head, just to get you started:

  • Mini
  • Premier drums
  • Cyrus HiFi
  • Internet
  • Jaguar

So I have to say that I personally think Facebook have got it wrong as people are fans of brands and I think if you just like something you can take it or leave it and in these times I think that can be a dangerous thing for a business and brand.

Let me know what you think are Facebook right and do you agree with loving a brand etc?

Social Networking and how fantastic it really is

Posted by on Feb 4, 2010 in Blogging, Facebook | 0 comments

I am going to start off with a story of a great dad who was, as all siblings know, the best dad in the world, well mine was!

He died on Tuesday leaving a large hole in all the remaining families’ lives but what really astonished me, unlike when my mum died about six years ago, how the likes of Facebook and blogging have played such a major part in his death and letting people know.

Facebook
After dad died I put a message on Facebook and I was astonished by the response from friends, and they are friends, and sympathy I and the family received, this wasn’t possible six years ago as these types of websites were all still in their infancy or even thought of and letting large group of friends and family was virtually impossible.

Whether you think it should be used for this is obviously your opinion but just looking around Facebook and seeing how many pages there are for people who lose their lives either too soon, suddenly, in tragic or horrific circumstances or our brave service men and women give me hope that the world is better for these platforms.

Blogging
Obviously as you are reading this it is something that we couldn’t have done a few years ago, well that’s not strictly true I know but getting your message out was really difficult as early bloggers found.

Social Networking is a powerful tool so use it wisely.

Anyway if this post has spurred you to write your story, or part of it at least, then set up your blog and let the world know through FB and Twitter, let me know how you go?

You have a fan page on Facebook…now what?

Posted by on Dec 23, 2009 in Facebook | 0 comments

So you have created a new fan page on Facebook and you have about a dozen ‘fans’ but how do you know they are the correct fans? Have you a strategy in place that will get you more fans that will buy your products or services? Do you know how to spot a real fan and someone who just connects so they aren’t ‘Billy no mates’?

This doesn’t just apply to Facebook, this applies to all social networking sites that can bring your business increased sales or exposure.

Over the coming weeks I will talk you through how to spot the real fan and maybe get a little piece of the action for your business, but the bottom line is if you don’t have a sound strategy or goal in place then it will just meander on into oblivion.
